Schools, bpost, Stib, SNCB ...: here are the disturbances expected following the demonstration of May 16th
This Wednesday, a national event organized by the unions will take place between the three stations of Brussels. Nearly 50,000 people are announced by the unions.
The police of Brussels Capital-Ixelles has already announced the course of this event for pensions and against the policy of the federal government on this subject: the protesters will depart at 11:30 from the Gare du Nord before joining Rogier and Botanique, the boulevard Pacheco, the central station, the rue des Bogards, Anneessens, boulevard Lemonnier and finally the Gare du Midi. It is likely that major arteries will be cut off earlier, the police added.
All vehicles parked on the central berm of the Boulevard du Midi and Poincaré Boulevard in the station area of the Midi will also be repaired. A parking ban will also be applied on the entire course.
STIB
The Stib announces that transport may be disrupted this Wednesday following this event. "It is very difficult for Stib to estimate today precisely the number of its collaborators who will participate in the event and the extent of the disturbances that this will cause on the network. The Brussels Public Transport Company will make every effort to ensure, as far as possible, a service to the main lines " , announces the Brussels company in a press release. It encourages travelers to "use alternatives" other than public transport.
From Lijn
The services of the Flemish public transport company De Lijn will be disrupted by trade union actions from Wednesday to Sunday inclusive. Intra-urban services will be the most affected. On Wednesday, volunteer drivers will be assigned to the priority lines. On Wednesday, the disruption will be due to the cross-sectoral protest against the federal government's pension measures. From Thursday to Saturday, the socialist and liberal unions will take action against De Lijn's new structure.
SNCB
Railroad workers will not normally go on strike and will not participate in the protest, the unions say. Eight additional trains will also be commissioned to Brussels Wednesday because of the event . Protesters can also benefit from a special ticket "event", cheaper than a conventional ticket.
bpost
The distribution of mail should be disrupted in places on Wednesday, due to the national demonstration for pensions. Bpost is not yet able to assess the extent of these disturbances. The distribution of newspapers should globally be well.
schools
From 5,000 to 10,000 teachers will be in the streets of Brussels on Wednesday to protest against pension reform, according to an estimate given Monday evening at Belga by Koen Van Kerkhoven, the CSC-Flemish Education (COC). The unionist is based on extrapolations following a survey of delegates from all unions in both northern and southern schools.
